How to Create a Well-Balanced Look for Your Home

Posted on: October 10th, 2019

As you plan your home’s décor, it’s important to take a step back and make sure it all works together. When you create a cohesive look that carries across each room, it will appear balanced. A unifying theme throughout the whole house will help things look even and natural. Here are some décor tips to help you keep things balanced.

Create a Scrapbook for Planning

If you’re in the process of decorating, you have probably brainstormed and created at least one mood board. This is a great place to start before you choose to paint, furniture and more. Look for trends across the items you’ve selected to identify your preferences. Once you have an idea of the kind of atmosphere and associations you want to bring to your home, you can start putting together a scrapbook of items you want to buy in the future and items you already own. It can be helpful to see them together on paper, even if you don’t currently have your dream furniture.

Come Up with a Theme

Achieving balance doesn’t have to mean that every room looks exactly the same. But if you can come up with an overall theme you want for your house, that can help keep things from becoming too scattered. The theme can be something as simple as a rustic-chic, seaside cottage or bright and modern. You can even create your own theme by describing exactly what inspires you. As you buy furniture, make sure it can fit into this theme. Sticking to one theme throughout will give the house satisfyingly balanced décor.

Remember the Principles of Design

In interior design, there are several basic principles that designers use as a guide to creating a great space. Balance is used to describe a visual equilibrium. Different objects have different visual “weight,” meaning the amount of visual impact they have. A hot pink feathered throw pillow, for instance, has a lot of visual weight. Neutral colors and smooth textures have less weight. As you put together colors, shapes, and textures, remember to consider how they work together. Symmetrical balance is the most commonly referenced kind, and one example is a matching set of nightstands and lamps on both sides of the bed. Asymmetrical balance creates balance by approximating visual weight without matching items exactly. Don’t concentrate too much visual weight in any one spot, or else you will throw off the balance.

A balanced look will elevate your home’s style and make it a visual treat to walk through. Use great, quality furniture to give the house a unified appearance.
